Simple Science: Crawling Rainbow

By Kelly Rostorfer, Publisher for NE Macaroni KID March 4, 2023

March always makes me think of spring time, filled with rain showers and rainbows!

This morning Tyler accidently dropped his towel into water. He ask how the water was moving up the towel, rather than dripping down! I thought this was the perfect opportunity to make a spring rainbow at home, while learning about the "magic" of water!

You'll need:

  • 1 paper towel
  • washable markers
  • 2 cups of water

Directions

  1. Fold your paper towel vertically
  2. Cut about 1/3 off the end of your paper towel (if it is longer the colors may not spread all the way and may leave a white line in the center of your rainbow)
  3. Color the colors of the rainbow on the end of each side of the paper towel
  4. Dip about 1/2 the colored portions of the paper towel into the water
  5. Let it sit for 5-10 mins and enjoy watching your crawling rainbow

Tyler's eyes lit up when the water started to change colors. He was so excited to see the crawling rainbow form he asked me if it was real magic! I smiled, and explained it is science in action! We talked about gravity-vs- capillary action- simply how to surface tension of the water allows the colors to spread upward. We had so much fun watching the colors come together!
