Winter Fun: Exploring Ice

By Kelly Rostorfer, NE Columbus Publisher January 21, 2023

Today's forecast is calling for colder temperatures and SNOW! Kids in Northeast Columbus will be anxious to get outside to play in the snow! Did you know there is a way to add a "pop" of color to those cold winter days, while also learning something new? When the temperatures drop we like to make these simple and colorful balls of ice!

What you need:

  • Balloons
  • Water
  • Scissors
  • Optional- Food coloring, glitter, objects etc.

Directions

  1. Put a few drops of food coloring into a balloon, glitter, etc.
  2. Fill the balloon with water to desired size and tie
  3. Freeze in the Freezer or if it is cold enough you can let the water balloons freeze outside for 12 hours
  4. Remove the balloon with scissors

Enjoy! You can line the walk way for an extra pop of color against the white snow. We LOVE to use these colorful balls for "Snow bowling".

This is a great opportunity to learn about ICE together.

  • What is Ice?
  • Where does ice come from?
  • Where else in the world might you find ice?
  • Are there any animals that use ice for their home?
  • How does ice feel?
  • Is it heavy or light?
  • Will it sink or float?
  • Which one will melt first? Place one ice ball on top of the snow and burry one under the snow and see what will happen!
  • What happens if the Ice is larger or smaller?
