Apple-pie Playdough

Welcome the smells of fall into your home for the entire season!

By Kelly Rostorfer September 25, 2022

There is something so special about autumn in Ohio. The crisp air, changing foliage and the warm smells of the season! We use Playdough A LOT in our house, especially on those cold and rainy fall days. I like to make homemade playdough, and tailor it to the seasons or whatever topic we are learning about throughout the week. This week, all the local pumpkin patches, and apple orchards are open for the season. This is the perfect opportunity to make some sweet-smelling Apple Pie Playdough. There are a few reasons I LOVE this playdough.

  • It is sensory friendly and keeps kids engaged while exploring different topic
  •  It is so simple to make with a handful of cupboard staples.
  • It doubles as a simple decorative potpourri to make your house smell amazing- LONG after you are done playing with it- I’ll explain HOW!

Recipe: Basic Salt Dough

  • 2 Cups of All-purpose Flour
  • 1 cup of Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar
  • 1 Tablespoon oil (coconut, vegetable, canola, avocado etc.)
  • 11/3 Cups of Boiling water
  • Food coloring of your choice. I do not color mine as I reuse it!

For Apple Pie Dough you can choose your combination:

2 Heaping Tablespoons or Apple-pie Spice

OR

1 Heaping Tablespoon of Cinnamon and 1 Heaping Tablespoon of Apple-pie Spice

Instructions

  • Combine all dry ingredients
  • Slowly stir in the boiling water while mixing with a spoon
  • Once the water has cooled down you will knead the dough into a ball
  • Let the ball of Apple-pie dough cool for 15 minutes
  • YOUR READY FOR SWEET-SMELLING FALL FUN

We will be “planting” apple seeds, making apples, stamping leaves and making full fall cut outs with our dough.

We store our dough in an airtight container to keep it fresh for a few more uses. When we are done playing with the dough it is time to transform this craft to fall potpourri!

Instructions for Apple-Pie dough Potpourri

  • Roll out dough on our counter and make various fall shapes (leaves, pumpkins, or stamped designs)
  • If you want to hang your designs- use a straw to make a small circle at the top to hang with ribbon or twine
  • Bake your designs at 200 degrees F for 30 minutes then flip and bake the other side for 30 minutes
  • Let your designs cool and hang them or arrange them to your liking and enjoy the sweet-smells of Apple- Pie the rest of the fall season!
