I had a goldfish when I was a child. I think many of us did. Mine was named Charlie and he lived in a modest glass tank with a plant and some gravel. Though he was cool, he was no GloFish (no offense Charlie!). GloFish completely take pet fish to the next level - - the fish actually glow! Everything in the whole tank does in fact. Using a special LED light and bright ornamental plants and decorations, along with naturally brightly colored fish, it’s true, it all glows. Even in daylight! According to my kids, on a coolness factor it’s a 10 for sure!
My kids loved setting up the five gallon aquarium kit that GloFish sent us, along with gravel, plants and an ornament (treasure chest) to try out at home. My kids loved setting up the tank (yes, my kids easily set it up themselves!) and seeing the plants and treasure chest glow when we turned on the light. My oldest had a concerned question though, one that I am sure many of you have, "how do they glow?" You’ll be happy to know, as we were, that GloFish are born brilliant, not injected or dyed. They were originally bred more than ten years ago to help detect environmental pollutants. By adding a naturally derived fluorescence trait to the fish, scientists hoped to quickly and easily determine when a waterway is contaminated. Scientists soon realized the public’s interest in sharing the benefits of this research, a process which led to GloFish fluorescent fish. Get more info in their FAQs.
There are six aquarium kits in all, ranging in shapes and sizes (from 1 to 10 gallons), so there is something for all space needs, even small ones. With fun backgrounds, plants and ornaments for your tank, all which will glow when the florescent light is on, it’s sure to thrill any fish loving person on your holiday list.
I was excited to showcase the GloFish at our Holiday Toy Preview party and see what everyone had to say. The kids (and parents) were completely fascinated by the bright colors that glowed even in the light, and fact that fish would glow in it too! I heard some discussions from the kids to parents about the need for a GloFish tank at their houses!
You can get GloFish products and fish at most major retailers, such as Meijer, Walmart, PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus, Jack’s Pets, Aquarium Adventure, and PETCO. You can also buy products and fish directly from GloFish.com, and range from $5 to $10 per fish.
