Today I surprised my family by taking them to see
Sesame Street Live "Make A New Friend." I've always loved the themes Sesame Street uses, and the "No matter where you’re from or where you've been, everyone is special" theme of this show was absolutely great! Our favorite characters: Elmo, Grover, Abby Cadabby, and Cookie Monster, along with the other Sesame Street friends welcome Chamki, Grover’s friend from India, to Sesame Street. The characters explored the fun of friendship and celebrated cultural similarities using songs and dancing, and even sharing cookies. All three of my children got really excited when they sang about sharing cookies, and I think they were even a little disappointed when they figured out that Chamki didn't have cookies for them too!
Both halves of the show were encapsulated with songs and dancing which continued to keep the kids entertained and moving, especially the preschool-aged children in the audience. Everyone became especially excited when the Sesame Street characters danced their way down into the aisles! We had great seats so we got a close up view of the characters, and each time they came into the audience you could see the children around us light up with anticipation that they too would get to dance with them.
While the bright lights, upbeat music and colorful furry characters were a big hit with the toddler and preschool-aged children in the theater, the overall theme and element of surprise were the most exciting part for the school-aged children. My older two mentioned their favorite parts were when Chamki first surprised Grover on stage in the first half and then when the two characters suddenly appeared on top of the elephants head toward the end of the show.
Bringing three children, a 6 year old boy, 4 year old girl, and 17 month old boy, to the theater was exciting in itself, but I was also eager to watch their reactions to the show. I loved hearing my kids shout out things during the show, like when my 4 year old daughter said in awe as she was dancing in her seat, "wow I didn't know Cookie Monster could dance like that!!" right after he did a cartwheel on stage. My other favorite part was when my 6 year old pretended to not be interested, but then scooted himself to the edge of his seat, eyes wide and saying, "look mom, those are real boys and girls on stage dancing with them!"
I will note that when we first entered the theater my husband was a little skeptical about all the overall noise from children singing and yelling, the babies crying and the number of kids out of their seats. However, he admitted that it was nice to see the kids enjoying themselves and not to have to worry about keeping our kids silent as you would normally do when in a theater setting. The beginning of the show was a little difficult to hear as the music and singing was overpowered by the excitement of all the children in the audience, which is actually a good thing! After the first number, the children quieted down and became completely captivated by the characters on stage. As the children got more and more drawn into the show they settled into a level of detailed silent excitement, almost a trance, that quieted the noise significantly. It was amazing how that many children of different ages just became captivated so quickly.
Overall
Sesame Street Live "Make a New Friend" did not disappoint! This show was very high energy and well structured. My whole family was moving, dancing and having a great time. I can't wait to go again when my 17 month old is older and will be able to remember more.
