So your child has braces, but what does that mean for you, the parent? Of course most of the work lies on the child to take proper care of the braces and maintain a healthy mouth, but Mom and Dad can help too.
How can you help your child?
- Help your child establish a personal relationship with their orthodontist. Instead of coming back with your child to the exam room during routine appointments, allow your child to go alone. Orthodontics is non-invasive and non-threatening, and thus a great opportunity to foster self-reliance. Encourage them to write down any questions they may have about their treatment or next steps. This will teach them independence as well as inspire them to take charge of their treatments. Of course, if you need to talk to the orthodontist, don’t hesitate to speak up as well!
- Make sure you take them to all of their appointments. Regular adjustments are essential to achieving the optimal results. Skipping follow-ups can hinder progress, extend treatment time, and compromise the outcome.
- Prepare a kit with a toothbrush, wax and lip balm for your child to put in their backpack. This will help them remove any stuck food after meals as well as keep their teeth and lips more comfortable after they first get their braces.
- If one of their wires or brackets breaks, don’t panic! Don’t try to pull it out, which could make things worse. Cover any sharp edges with wax or wet cotton and call your orthodontist.
Achieving a good result with braces requires you and your child’s effort and participation. Your mouth is an important part of yourself and your overall heath. Don’t wait to talk to an orthodontist if you have any concerns or questions about you or your child’s smile!
